General Counsellor

COSTI REQUIRES A GENERAL COUNSELLOR FOR ITS NORTH YORK CENTRE

Duties:

  • Provides assessment of client needs and development of both short and long term counselling and orientation programs to newcomers and long-term immigrants, particularly those from the Spanish speaking community.
  • Through a Case Management service model, assists clients with information, referral, document completion, crisis intervention and supportive counselling services.
  • Organises group orientation sessions and facilitates programs for seniors.
  • Participates in outreach to the community; promotes the programs and services of COSTI.
  • Provides follow-up to clients.
  • Liaises with government offices, community groups, partner organizations, educational institutions and volunteers.
  • Keeps administrative records of services and activities, prepares necessary reports and inputs data using COSTI and ICARE databases.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours, including evenings.
  • Performs other duties as required.
  • Qualifications:

  • Community College diploma in Social Services or equivalent.
  • Minimum nine months experience in providing client focused settlement services. This includes:
    • Organising and facilitating orientation sessions and support groups to address any of the following topics:
      • Initial and post settlement health needs e.g. Canada’s food guide, Elder Abuse, finding a doctor;
      • Financial issues e.g. income supports, power of attorney
      • Safety e.g. fraud prevention, fire prevention
      • Seniors housing options, tenant rights, subsidized housing
      • Citizenship preparation
    • Conducting needs assessments, to address any of the following issues:
      • Immigration (PR expiry, sponsorship, work permit), basic needs (food, shelter, banking), employment, Money and finances, childcare, housing (subsidy, Rent Bank), crisis intervention (child abuse, women & elder abuse), Income support (OW, ODSP, CPP, OAS), Education (high school, LINC, ESL, post-secondary).
    • Assisting clients in identifying long and short-term goals and developing settlement plans for initial or post settlement needs.
    • Completing various application forms that includes: Work permit, study permit, letter of invitation, citizenship, sponsorship (spouse and child sponsorship), PR applications for Protected persons, PR renewals, CPP/Old Age Pensions.
  • Demonstrated experience utilizing a case management service model in helping clients address complex settlement challenges.
  • Demonstrated experience providing information/referral services to address settlement needs presented by clients.
  • Must be able to communicate in Spanish; other languages would be an asset.
  • Preference will be given to those who have provided settlement supports to the Hispanic community.
  • Experience in conducting various methods of outreach.
  • Experience with the ICARE database and other data collection programs.
  • Knowledge of and sensitivity to the needs and barriers experienced by newcomers and seniors.
  • Life Skills Coaches' training preferred.
