Evening Counsellor

COSTI REQUIRES AN EVENING COUNSELLOR FOR ITS SHELTER SERVICES

Duties:

  • Reports to the Centre Manager and assistant manager and work with Counsellors to ensure the smooth operation of the Centre, which includes responding to emergency situations, clients medical needs and injuries.
  • Admits and discharges clients, updates the Shelter Management Information System (SMIS) as required.
  • Creates client profiles on COSTI’s database.
  • Responds to client questions with regards to services in the Hostel Services programs and the refugee claimant process.
  • Provides interpretation services, as required.
  • Work closely with the counsellors to support the clients in their case plan.
  • Identifies and ensures minor maintenance problems are resolved.
  • Communicates in a timely and professional manner with the facility management regarding any client concerns.
  • Provides new arrivals with Centre specific information, including orientation on emergency procedures, house rules, laundry, etc.
  • Performs administrative tasks, as required (e.g. replenishing client forms, creating client files, distribution of client mail, answering phone calls, etc.)
  • Responds to incoming telephone calls at reception desk.
  • Performs nightly bed checks.
  • Qualifications:

  • Social Services Worker Diploma or equivalent with relevant practicum experience.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the refugee claimant process.
  • At least 6 months experience in a shelter setting.
  • Sensitivity to and aware of the needs of refugees and other newcomers.
  • Ability to communicate in other languages is an asset.
  • Demonstrates ability with supportive counselling/crisis management.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Demonstrates verbal and written proficiency in English.
  • Ability to communicate in any of the following languages would be and asset: Arabic, Farsi/Dari, Amharic, Tigrinya, Spanish.
  • Possession of a current First Aid/CPR training certificate would be an asset.
  • Possession of a Valid Vulnerable Sector Screening Certificate. Must have been completed within last 6 months.

    Starting Salary Range:

    $38,671 to $41,620 per annum + benefits

    This is a non-Union contract position scheduled to work 35 hours per week

    (Monday- Friday from 3:00pm – 11:00pm)

    Priority consideration will be given to those on Notice of Recall.

    Subject to the response of those on Notice of Recall, this position may be open to Union members on a secondment basis.
