Building a Relationship with Your Mentee
All mentors have the ability to create and maintain relationships. This ability will be a significant part of your process. There are a few things about the mentoring relationship that require special emphasis:
- The mentor sets the tone and the climate for the meetings.
- Always have an agenda for the meeting, even if you depart from it when a different priority develops.
- The best time to offer a suggestion is when it's asked for.
- You earn the right to offer advice by taking the time to get to know the mentee.
- Listen, listen, listen.
- Ask a lot of open questions.
- Reinforce your mentee's strengths.
- Show you understand your mentee's challenges and issues.
- Provide structure, balance formality and informality, and maintain boundaries.
- Be honest and always say what you mean. 182
Who Can Be A Mentor?
Mentors are welcome from any profession and must meet standard criteria. They must have:
- been employed or self-employed for at least three years;
- demonstrated links to professional associations and other business networks;
- a knowledge of current labour market demands, context, trends and required competencies and skills;
- good interpersonal and communication skills; and
- an appreciation of employment issues related to internationally trained professionals, cross-cultural sensitivity and awareness.
