General Counsellor

COSTI REQUIRES A GENERAL COUNSELLOR FOR ITS’ CORVETTI EDUCATION CENTRE

Duties:

  • Provides intake, assessment of client needs and development of both short and long term counselling and orientation services to newcomers.
  • Through a Case Management service model, assists clients with information, referral, crisis intervention and supportive counselling services.
  • Assists clients through information, referral, documentation, crisis intervention and supportive counselling services.
  • Organizes and facilitates group orientation sessions.
  • Provides General Counselling services at community organizations at least once weekly.
  • Provides follow-up to clients.
  • Advocates, outreach and promotes the programs and services of the agency.
  • Liaises with government, community groups, educational institutions and volunteers regarding services for clients.
  • Keeps administrative records of services and activities, prepares necessary reports and inputs data using COSTI CISv2 and ICARE databases.
  • Performs other duties as required.
  • Qualifications:

  • Social Service Worker Diploma or equivalent with relevant practicum experience.
  • Minimum of one (1) year experience in providing settlement counselling:
    • Assist in application process for SIN, OHIP, work permit, study permit, applications and renewals for PR and Convention refugees, citizenship and other applications.
    • Provide information and referrals to government and non-government services for information on housing, employment, education, health, language and IEP bridging programs.
    • Assist in applying for Provincial and City services for refugee claimants, Permanent Residents and Citizens.
    • Providing one-to-one emotional supportive counselling.
    • Advocate on behalf of newcomers and immigrants accessing government and non-government services.
  • Must have previous experience and thorough knowledge of settlement issues facing refugees and new immigrants Sensitive to the needs of newcomers and aware of the social and economic trends of immigrants.
  • Demonstrated work experience in providing case management.
  • Demonstrated experience organizing and facilitating groups is essential.
  • Strong customer service skills and demonstrated ability to liaise with community organizations.
  • Experience in conducting various methods of outreach.
  • Demonstrated ability to work under pressure of heavy caseload and deadlines.
  • Sound knowledge of CIS v2, iCARE database, Internet, Email and MS Office in a Windows environment.
  • Must be able to travel within the GTA to multiple locations using public transportation.
  • Highly developed organizational skills, ability to multi-task and set priorities independently.
  • Fluency in a second language considered an asset.
  • Good written and oral communication skills in English is required.

    Starting Salary Range:

    $25.48 to 27.42 per hour
