New Beginnings: Problem Gambling Awareness Kit for Newcomers in Ethnocultural Communities
Produced by COSTI and the Responsible Gambling Council (RGC), New Beginnings: Problem Gambling Awareness Kit for Newcomers in Ethnocultural Communities, is a video resource for use with recent newcomers to Canada. The video provides information on problem gambling and offers suggestions on prevention.
Funded by the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, Mental Health and Addictions Branch, the video brings attention to the risk of problem gambling, ways to avoid those risks, realistic expectations of winning and losing, and where to find help. The video features individuals who have experienced problem gambling first hand, as well as service providers working in the community:
A Facilitator's Guide, interactive quiz, and ESL language practice exercises are included in the resource kit. The guide assumes that the facilitator has no special knowledge of problem gambling. Anyone who works in the field can use the guide, but may find some of the background information to be basic .
The resource kit is available to problem gambling service providers and school boards at no charge, in English and French. Download an order form. [Adobe PDF, 300 KB]
