The Canadian Immigrant and Integration Program (CIIP)

The Canadian Immigrant and Integration Program (CIIP)

The Canadian Immigrant and Integration Program (CIIP) provides free pre-departure orientation to Federal Skilled Workers, Provincial Nominees and their spouses and adult dependents at the final stages of the immigration process. It prepares newcomers for their economic integration to Canada back in their country of origin. This program allows individuals to attend an one-day orientation workshop, an individual planning session with an Orientation Officer, and connect with an Online Counsellor based in Canada all within their home country.

COSTI is pleased to be the Ontario Settlement Partner for CIIP and receives client referrals from CIIP offices operating in India, China, Philippines and the United Kingdom, serving a total of twenty-five countries.

As the Ontario Settlement Partner, COSTI provides information, planning and online support to individuals prior to their arrival in Canada. We provide information on housing, the Ontario school system, workers’ rights, credential assessment and other settlement requirements. We also make referrals to connect newcomers to other services they may need before arriving in Canada. This program is delivered in partnership with the Association of Canadian Community Colleges (ACCC).

The Canadian Immigrant Integration Program (CIIP) video below explains the pre-arrival services available in Ontario and how important it is for immigrants to connect with Ontario advisors while they are still in their home country.

Employment Standards in Ontario

Learn About Employment Standards in Ontario

Fairness in the workplace is the right of all Ontarians. Employment standards are enforced under the Employment Standards Act, 2000 (ESA), which sets out the minimum standards that employers and employees must follow.

The Ministry of Labor, through its Employment Standards Program:

  • Enforces the ESA and its regulations
  • Provides information and education to employers and employees, making it easier for people to understand and comply voluntarily
  • Investigates possible violations
  • Resolves complaints

If you are employed in Ontario, you are probably protected by the ESA. To find out more, check out our General Information Fact Sheet.

Are You Covered by the ESA?

This fact sheet is provided for your information and convenience only. It is not a legal document. For complete information, refer to the Employment Standards Act, 2000 and its regulations.

The ESA sets out rights of employees and requirements that apply to employers in most Ontario workplaces.

What Work is Not Covered by the ESA?

Most employees and employers in Ontario are covered by the ESA. However, the ESA does not apply to certain individuals and persons or organizations for whom they may perform work, including:

  • Employees in sectors that fall under federal jurisdiction, such as airlines, banks, the federal civil service, post offices, radio and television stations and inter-provincial railways
  • Individuals performing work under a program approved by a college of applied arts and technology or university
  • A secondary school student who performs under a program authorized by the school board that operates the school in which the student is enrolled
  • People who do community participation under the Ontario Words Act, 1997
  • Police officers (except for the Lie Detectors part of the ESA, which does apply)
  • Inmates taking part in work or rehabilitation programs, or young offenders who perform work as part of a sentence or order of a court
  • People who hold political, judicial, religious or elected trade union offices

Employees of the Crown are excluded from some (but not all) provisions of the ESA.

For a complete listing of other work categories not governed by the ESA, please check the ESA and its regulations. Regulations set out exemptions to the law, special rules and details about how to apply certain sections of the ESA.
